Signature Programs

Imagine waking up to the refreshing sea breeze, starting the day with learning deeply connected to the world around you. At Tabor, our waterfront location isn’t just for show; it’s a living classroom that brings history, culture, and future-thinking together. We’re not just about book smarts—we’re about real-world, hands-on experience, both in and out of the classroom. Dive into our unique School by the Sea offerings.

SSV Tabor Boy

Part sail training vessel, part classroom, and part lab, the SSV Tabor Boy is a unique educational asset of our school by the sea. The Tabor Boy is a 115-foot, gaff-rigged, two-masted schooner that has been a part of the school since 1954. SSV stands for “Sailing School Vessel” and is the U.S. Coast Guard’s designation for the schooner. She is one of two Coast Guard inspected vessels in her class that operate in the northeastern United States. Tabor Boy is inspected and constructed as suitable for off-shore, open ocean passage making.

Sailing

A two-season sport at Tabor, the sailing team boasts roughly fifty sailors from all four grades. The school is a member of the New England Schools Sailing Association (NESSA), which emphasizes team racing. Sailing practices four days a week on Sippican Harbor in the school’s eighteen collegiate 420s and six FJs, and typically competes on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Tabor’s sailing program is consistently one of the top programs in the country and competes regularly for the New England Championship as well as the Baker Trophy (Sailing National Championship).

Nautical Science

Our nautical science electives are uniquely suited to allow students to test their knowledge and apply their leadership skills in real-life situations or in controlled simulations, such as when we study sea survival in our Lifeboatman course. Actually applying what is discussed in class on the water changes the theory into experience, building confidence and skill. These hands-on programs set Tabor apart by teaching important life-long skills steeped in tradition.

Marine Science

Tabor’s science curriculum is enhanced by courses devoted to the study and care of the ocean. The Marine and Nautical Science (MANS) Center, built in 2005, is situated in a beautiful salt marsh directly on Sippican Harbor. The facility, including the Schaefer Wet Lab, is a perfect place to study marine biology. The curriculum begins with Biology of the Oceans, biology taught through an ocean-oriented lens.

Student Life

You belong here.

At Tabor, our strength lies in the unity of our community. While friendships flourish during games and weekends, we set aside dedicated moments three to four times a week to convene the entire school, celebrating achievements, savoring student performances, engaging in conversation, and collectively reflecting. At our School by the Sea, we understand that it's the people who shape remarkable learning environments. Both within and beyond the classroom, our students have fostered a compassionate culture that emboldens them to express their interests, talents, and ideas openly. In an environment where you're encouraged to be yourself while always belonging to our community, the horizons of possibility are boundless.

Some of the ways we connect as a community:

CHAPEL

Every week, the entire Tabor community converges at Wickenden Chapel for a non-denominational assembly. This gathering includes engaging Chapel Talks, where members of the senior class and faculty take the stage to address the community. Accompanied by musical pieces performed on the organ and performances by Tabor’s talented singing or instrument groups, the Chapel Talk program provides speakers with the opportunity to share their personal experiences, sparking contemplation and reflection among the listeners. Through these personal speeches, the Tabor community draws even closer, fostering an atmosphere of acceptance and unity.

ADVISORY

Every other Tuesday, students and their
advisors come together in their advisory groups. While there might be shared agenda topics from the Dean's Office, this time is primarily dedicated to students reconnecting, touching base with their advisors, and organizing plans for personal meetings or engaging group activities. During their initial year at Tabor, students are matched with an advisor. After their first year, they have the option to either continue with the same group or choose a new advisor if they prefer. All ninth graders are part of a coordinated advisory program targeted to support students during their first year of high school.

ALL-SCHOOL MEETINGS

Thursday mornings, the school congregates in the Fireman Center Auditorium to hear announcements, plans for weekend activities, and see a performance by a Tabor group or an outside company. All School Meeting, run by the student Co-Heads of School, helps to build school spirit and keep everyone informed of what’s happening on campus.

DEPARTMENT/CLASS MEETINGS

Every other Friday, officers and advisors of each grade have the option of holding a class meeting. These assemblies pertain only to a single class and often involve updates from the college counseling office, plans for fundraising and general announcements.

We have a strong commitment to social-emotional well-being, providing our students with a support system of dedicated adults, ready to guide and encourage you every step of the way. Our objective is to nurture young adults who can stand for what’s important, work hard toward their goals, and yet remain comfortable with their unique selves.
